If you follow our Facebook page and read about our kennel and our dogs you've probably wondered, where did canine royalty come from? or what's the history behind the British Lighthound bloodline?
It all goes back to Furbo, a small rural town in Galway Ireland...
Alone and afraid, King Aubrey was found as a stray when he was little more than a young lad in Galway Ireland, he was taken in by an animal rescue. But what they didn't know was where he came from, soon they found out that this young German Shepherd mix was directly related to the town's valuable heroic dog.
His father Rocky the 3 year old German Shepherd belonged to a poor farmer, but Rocky was renowned and treasured by the city for helping rid their population of non venomous smooth snakes. Smooth shakes were a major problem, stealing farmer's chickens egg and slithering everywhere. All the other dogs were extremely frightened of snakes, but Rocky was a quick witted canine with careful stealthy maneuvers to sniff out and kill off the snakes. Over the course of 2 years he killed 650 smooth snakes, sustained multiple bites but he remarkably pulled through. Some people believe Rocky developed a strengthened immune system and thickened skin from getting repetitive bites.
He was awarded a Golden crown, the town threw a festival in celebration for this wonderful dog, the mayor built him a luxurious spacious dog house crested with gold with it's own fresh circulating water fountain inside, and because Rocky's owner didn't have much money they supplied his owner with the best food for the dog for his entire life. Now he would never go hungry again. Rocky lived a luxurious life and had a statue of him built, his memory would always be alive in their small town. But sadly Rocky came down with a serious case of the dog flu and passed away suddenly before his owner could get him to the vet, the town was devastated. But Rocky's owner had a neighbor who had a female mixed breed farm dog who became a mother not too long after Rocky passed away, all of the puppies found good homes in the country except one of them who was the last left with it's mother, one day their owner returned home and the puppy who was now a few months old had disappeared and they didn't have a clue where they could be. Soon an animal rescue found the stray puppy but the owner didn't claim them. A sweet lady who was visiting from Yorkshire, England applied to adopt the puppy, then they realized how similar this puppy looked like Rocky. A DNA test confirmed that this puppy was Rocky's son! The lady, named Clementine ended up getting the puppy, and with him he inherited royalty, his father's crown, and a small grant from the town, Clementine was amazed and she promised that she would take great care of him and treat him like a king. The town was overjoyed that Rocky will live on in Aubrey, who was now coronated King Aubrey. This inspired Clementine to train Aubrey to be the best he could be, and continue Rocky's bloodline and breed functional agility fit dogs. Royalty became a tradition as we welcomed new dogs into our kennel.
About the Bloodline/Breed: The type of dog we're cultivating is not considered a purebreed, it's only defined by it's purpose which is a highly efficient agility dog, dubbed the British Lighthound. They come in a variety of colours and patterns. Although one day in a few generations when our dogs' physique gets more consistent we might consider registering them to SIKC as an official breed. Our bloodline consists of mixed breeds and as a result has a wide genetic diversity, they are never inbred and they aren't prone to any genetically inherited diseases that are common in purebreds. Purebreds are wonderful dogs, but purebreds often have strong desires to herd, hunt, or perform the jobs they were originally designed to do, it's ingrained into them, while on the other hand we wanted our dogs to have low to moderate prey-drive and be very adaptable to their environment without being too aggressive or strong willed. We realize that alot of people are fond of adopting mixed breed dogs who are unique, but there's no way of predicting their size or knowing who their parents were, this is why we chose to create this line, this way you can know nearly everything about your dog's parents, their temperament, see photos, videos, documentation of all kinds, and pedigree without investing in a specific purebreed. They can be excellent at agility, but also great at hunting or tracking down pheasants or prey because they have high energy and are bred to be great motivated working dogs, but they don't have to be :) They are good-natured, and wonderful family dogs.
